"Thanks," he says, waiting for Jack to step aside before he enters the room, giving it a quick once-over out of habit.

There are circles under Jack's eyes that are darker than usual, and the stiffness to his friend's movement certainly doesn't go unnoticed, but Carl doesn't mention them right away. He waits for Jack to lock the door behind them before he speaks again.

"I heard..." he glances over at Jack. "I overheard a few things downstairs tonight and I...I wanted to make sure you were all right. Are you?"

He knows the answer should be 'no', but he doubts it will be.
